Keep No Score

Picture 2copy.jpg Wednesday, 31 October 07 - 10:36 PM (GMT -07:00)
By Kerry Snyder in General

On my recent trip to Africa, I met a guy who would become a good friend (and he's an incredible photographer).  He had me listen to a song that struck a chord with me.  I went hope downloaded the album and fell in love.  I have not stopped listening to this album since June.  The song "Needle and Thread" became the theme to my son Caleb being born.  The album is "Keep No Score" by Sleeping At Last.

The music is absolutely moving and beautiful.  They lyrics are incredible and passionate.  Here is a sampling from one of the songs "Needle and Thread"

"All the blood and all the sweat
That we invested to be loved
Follows us into our end,
Where we begin to understand

That we are made of love,
And all the beauty stemming from it.
We are made of love,
And every fracture caused by the lack of it.
"

Do yourself a favor and go download this CD, or purchase it from your nearest electronics or music store.  Then, send me your thank yous.

The Future Is Bright

Picture 2copy.jpg Sunday, 28 October 07 - 05:12 PM (GMT -07:00)
By Kerry Snyder in General

Sorry to blog yet another Sox post, but it's world series time, and well... I can get a little baseball crazy this time of year, especially when the Sox are involved.  So, indulge me once more.

No matter what happens in this series (even if the Sox were to somehow tank it and lose out), the future of the Boston Red Sox is certainly bright.  People can write and complain all they want about the payrolls in baseball, and the high price of players.  And yes, I do think it's a bit out of control, but even if you do put a cap (not just a luxury tax) on salaries, you will still have cheap owners who couldn't care less about their fan base and fielding a good team (see K.C. Royals), and who would still be an average of 50 million behind most teams, no matter what the cap was.  And no matter what the money comes down to, your players, still must play, or it's worthless (see N.Y. Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and N.Y. Mets).

Now I have certainly been vocal and upset about some off season contracts that the Boston Red Sox and Theo Epstein have handed out this year; J.D. Drew (no homerun is worth 14 million), Julio Lugo (quite possibly the worst contract yet) and Dice-K (I still think he'll end up dominating, but for over 100 million is a little crazy).  But I have to commend Theo for his commitment to young talent and the farm system.  It is certainly paying off even in this off season.  Here are some stats from the 2007 postseason.

    -  Josh Beckett just turned 27.  He has a 1.20 era, and 35 strikeouts over 30 innings.

    -  Jonathan Papelbon also 27.  Has established himself as one of the games top closers and has 6 k's over 9 innings with and ERA of 0.00.

    -  Dustin Pedroia (24), Kevin Youkilis (28), and Jacoby Ellsbury (24) have been the definite leaders and hearts of this 2007 world series.  Jacoby Ellsbury won everyone in the U.S. a free taco from Taco Bell for stealing the fist base of the world series. They have combined for 35 of the teams 92 post season runs, and knocked in 24 of those themselves, all are batting over .300 and have OBP of over or near .500.  All for around a million bucks.  Incredible.

We also have some up and coming and potential stars such as Jon Lester, Clay Bucholz (who pitched a no hitter against Baltimore this year), Manny Delcarmen, Craig Hansen, Kevin Cash, Brandon Moss, Daniel Bard, Bryce Cox, and Jed Lowrie.  All top prospects.

If any of these guys play with the heart, passion, and excellence of Pedroia and Ellsbury, than the Red Sox future truly is bright.

Oh, by the way, as I wrote this post, Jacoby Ellsbury just came in to score the first run of game 4 of the World series.  Go Sox Go.

Good, No GREAT Weekend!

Picture 2copy.jpg Sunday, 21 October 07 - 11:50 PM (GMT -07:00)
By Kerry Snyder in General

Despite Caleb's desire to PARTY all night long on Friday, and my subsequent one hour of sleep, we had a great visit from Robin's dad this weekend.  He came to visit his new grandson, and we all got to go pick out pumpkins at the pumpkin patch.

We had a great time, and Caleb had a great time, cause he got to sleep the entire time we were dragging him around lookin for pumpkins.  Well, except for when Mom and Dad were making him pose in ridiculous poses in search of the "Cute Photo".  Note the photo below as evidence #1.

I then went to church for our fall celebration.  We had 29 Baptisms, over 50 new members, and a TON of Child dedications.  I got to baptize 5 of my students, which is always such a blessing for me as a youth pastor.  I got to baptize one young lady along side her father, and then baptize her best friend who she started bringing to church, who's parents were baptized earlier in the evening by our senior pastor.  Then got to watch my buddy Nick (also our Jr. High Pastor) baptize a couple Jr. Highers.  It was a very cool night, and I love getting to be a part of students declaring their faith and commitment to Christ in the act of Baptism.

Then got home to BBQ some burgers with my family and watch the Red Sox win game 6 of the ALCS, forcing a game 7 on Sunday at Fenway.  That was nice.

Then we had a great morning at burn on Sunday, it's really great to see the students getting it, being interested, and following along.  Especially since we're going through the book of Ephesians.

Then, there was this.

The Red Sox are headed to the World Series...Again!  Man it feels good to type that.  The beat out the Cleveland Indians to move on to face the Colorado Rockies, who I blogged about earlier this month.  Luckily the Rockies have had some time to cool off, literally, since they were practicing in a snow storm on Saturday!  They were hot coming into, and all through the playoffs.  It'll be a good series, but I think the Sox can do it again.  Wouldn't that be nice, 2 times in 4 years.  Go Sox!

Early Morning Thoughts

Picture 2copy.jpg Saturday, 20 October 07 - 07:11 AM (GMT -07:00)
By Kerry Snyder in General

I have to say, that Robin has done an awesome job with Caleb.  I know that they've had a couple of late nights and she has been so patient and caring with him.  All last week I was sick, and not wanting mom or baby to get sick, I got the luxury of my own room.  Still not feeling super, but Robin's dad is in town, so it's back to our room for me.  And what a welcome back.  This was officially dad's first all-nighter.  Caleb, for some unknown reason, would not sleep.  He was nice and fed, warm, but not tired.  And the only time he wouldn't cry, was when we would hold or rock him.  ALL NIGHT.  So here's Caleb and dad, 5:30 this morning going for a stroll around the neighborhood.  So now, he's finally out at 6:16 am, but I'm up.  I don't think this kind of behavior deserves a trip to the pumpkin patch with Grandpa today!

So since I'm up, here's what's going through my mind:

-  Schilling needs to pull out a remake of game 6 of the 2004 ALCS.  I say if people want to believe the bloody sock was fake, let's give them a reason to.  That would really mess with the tribes heads...Schill comes out with a bloody sock on...Epic.  Just for good luck, I'm wearing my red sox today.

-  I'm beginning to realize the gentleness and patience that God shows to me most of the time.  It took every fiber of me not to just want to be frustrated and angry tonight, constantly wondering..."WHY CAN'T YOU JUST GO TO SLEEP!"  But a small calm voice kept reminding me to be patient and gentle.  I've learned alot in these 3 short weeks already.

-  We're taking Caleb to the Pumpkin Patch today. It's kind of our fist big family outing, and it will be good to have Robin's dad there, as he doesn't get to see Caleb all that often.

-  I've been really excited to go through the book of Ephesians with our students over at burn. Last week was the background on Ephesus, the place, the people, etc... But I came at it a little differently in the challenge to the High School students.  I read the letter to the church at Ephesus from Revelation ch. 2 and talked about how the church had forgotten it's first love, and in order to get back to that place, they needed to repent (to change their direction) and do the things they did at first, when they first came to Christ.  I compared it to doing all those stupid little things we do when we first fall in love with somebody, we go out of our way to show them we love them.  Then, we go out for a while, or we're married a couple years, and it just gets easy to be lazy in showing your love.  That's how it is with Christ.  We are passionate about Him and our relationship when we first come to Him.  We pray, read our bibles, our words about Him are passionate and frequent.  But then, we get to comfy, we become complacent. I challenged the students to do what it says in Revelation, remember the lives Christ called them from, then to change their direction, and do the things they did at first, or if they're just investigating Christ, to do some of those things, see what happens.  It's been a huge thing in my life this week.  Remembrance.  God wants us to remember things, especially who we were, or who we could be, without Him.  Remember, then change directions, and do the things you did when you first fell in love.  This week it's onto Ch. 1, with all that in mind.  Should be a great series.

-  Yes, Caleb has been up a couple times as I wrote this.  Now he's really up.  I got to go.  Pray for this child.

Dangerous.

Picture 2copy.jpg Tuesday, 16 October 07 - 12:07 AM (GMT -07:00)
By Kerry Snyder in General

The Rocky Mountains are dangerous.  People die from falling, avalanches, landslides, falling rocks, and animals each year.  If you take them for granted, and don't know what you're doing, you will get hurt, badly.

The Colorado Rockies are living up to their name, and the reputation is the same.  If you mess with these guys, take them for granted, and don't know what you're doing, you will get beat.  Just ask the Dodgers, the Padres, the Philles, and the Diamondbacks.

Winners of 21 of the last 22 games.  They swept past the Phillies, swept the D-Backs (who swept the Cubs), and join the '76 Reds as the only teams who have started their post season 7-0.

They have great defense, good pitching, speed, they hit well, they have mashers like Todd Helton, a probable NL MVP in Matt Holliday, a probable ROTY in Troy Tulowitzki, they operate as a team (together), and a different guy is stepping up to lead the charge each and every night.

I attended a game where the Cubs blew out the Rockies at Coors Field this year, and the crowd was still amazing, even as they were losing.  Now that they're dominating the NL, that crowd is making Fenway sound like a funeral home.

With all those things, and that crowd behind them... These rockies are the most dangerous in the beautiful state of Colorado.

My only hope if Boston can pull past Cleveland, is that the Rocks have about 8 days to cool off before the World Series starts.

Does anyone really want to play these guys?

Fourteen

Picture 2copy.jpg Sunday, 14 October 07 - 11:11 PM (GMT -07:00)
By Kerry Snyder in General

I realize this post is two days over due, but here goes anyway...

On Friday, Caleb became 2 weeks old.  Hard to believe that only 16 days ago, he came into our life, I can't imagine life without him now.  So in celebration, here are 14 things about my son that have been amazing over the past 2 weeks.

1.  He stole my heart.

2.  He looks exactly like me when I was born.  Im not sure if that's a good thing or not, Robin says it's good, but at this point Im sure she's just trying to convince herself it's a good thing.

3.  The way he sleeps, so peaceful and all bundled up.  I love swaddling him up like a baby burrito.

4.. The way he sleeps when he's all sprawled out.  Arms up behind his head, legs spread out... He looks so comfy.

5.  He has peed in every room of the house.  Christening, or marking his territory...  Im not sure which, but he seems to enjoy making a sport of it.  At this point he's marked his room, me, robin, most of his clothes, his swing, a pillow, and I think speedy (not sure, not checking).  Seems marking his territory was priority number 1.

6.  The Diaper game - He likes to poop right after I change the diaper.  I've taken to faking taking off the diaper, and waiting a few minutes.  He goes but now, I think he's waiting me out.  At this point, it's just who blinks first.  I've got all day little man.

7.  He lost his umbilical cord.  This makes him look like a normal baby.  He thinks it makes him look cool.  The attitude starts already.

8.  The way he smiles when he has gas.  I don't care how it happens... The kid's got a cute smile.

9.  His tiny feet and hands.  His foot is the size of my big toe.

10. His eyes.  Beautiful, vibrant.  Taking in every bit of info they can.

11. His cry.  Something about his cry makes me think of the God who has knit him together.

12. His smell.  C'mon, you know what Im talking about.

13. Taking pictures of him.

14. He looks great in a Red Sox hat.

September 28, 2007

Picture 2copy.jpg Tuesday, 02 October 07 - 01:06 AM (GMT -07:00)
By Kerry Snyder in General

Friday morning the 28th began a little earlier than I expected.  Robin woke me up around 4:30 am and said that she had been having some pretty good contractions for the last hour, and we should probably take off for the hospital.  We got to the hospital around 5am.  She went into active labor a little after 8am and at 8:25am Caleb Hudson Snyder was born.

He was 8lbs 1.7oz and 19 3/4 inches long, with a ton of hair.

We got back from the hospital on Sunday evening, and amidst all the chaos and business, and getting settled in, I now get a moment to update this incredible moment here.  We are at home and enjoying being together as a family.  Mom is recovering from the birth, and Caleb is sleeping, eating, and pooping like he's been doing it his whole life, oh wait...he has.

We feel so blessed and excited for the gift God has given to us, and are learning to be the caretakers of this precious gift that God has chosen us to be. Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts about us, and our child during the past nine months.  Now you can be praying that we would be parents who lead their child into a closer walk with his heavenly father.

Im sure I will have many more posts about this amazing little guy later on in the week, so stay tuned.

You can check out more pics here - Flickr Page

Welcome to our family and to the world Caleb.  I love you.
