Africa

By Kerry Snyder in Africa

I am sitting outside at our hotel in Malawi.  It's early, 5:30 in the morning here.  I've been up since 4:30, because of what apparently is an ENORMOUS cricket.  I can only guess it's size due to the volume of it's chirping, which I believe has the ability to make my eardrums bleed.  So I got out of there.  Now, I sit in the darkness typing away, listening to the most vibrant and beautiful birds chirping away.  I found them up in the trees and saw the most brilliant colors, they are truly so much different from anything I've seen in the U.S.

Africa really is an amazing place.  I can see why so many fall in love with it and it finds a special place in their hearts.  I have only been here a couple of days, and not seen much.  But what I have seen is beautiful and pretty amazing.  The people here are incredible.  They are full of such life and vibrant joy.  Even in the most poor places, joy and energy seem to still find a way in.  Not to say that there are not those who are sick and in distress, that is definately a part of it.  It can also seem so overwhelming and distressing, my heart has already been breaking, but there seems to be hope.  Maybe it's just the direct result of God working in this place, but it is there, and it breaks through in the most beautiful moments.  The smile of a kid, the singing and dancing of a village, the beauty of this place.  Hope finds it's way in.  I am blessed to be able to be a part of it, to witness it, and to be changed by it.

We have visited some incredible organizations and programs so far, and the work that they are doing caring for the orphan, widow, and sick is incredible.  Something that can oly be orchestrated by a God who cares for His people.  To see they way some of the people literally give up their lives to care for others is inspiring.  I am amazed by a God who allows me, and invites me to be a part of His redemptive work in this place.

The sun is coming up now, and as you may have guessed, it to is beautiful.  It signals the start of another day, it signifies hope.  Light chasing away the darkness.  The story of God restoring his creation, of conquering over darkness.  The story that you and I are invited to be a part of.
